In his purist approach to architecture and interior design, Eero Saarinen sought the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution with an overall unity of design. In the 1940s, Eero Saarinen was challenged by Florence Knoll to create "a chair she could curl up in". The Finnish-born architect and designer responded with the 1948 Womb Chair, part of his groundbreaking seating collection for Knoll. With its steel rod base and frame upholstered in fabric over a fiberglass shell, The Child's Womb Chair facilitates the relaxed posture of the Womb Chair to a smaller scale.
