Alvar Aalto's 1933 design of the Chair N65, and the child-sized version seen here, is admired as much for its sculptural presence as for its strength and durability. The chair's framework consists of four of Aalto's signature L-shaped steam-bent legs, upon which rides the seat—a thick sheet of plywood available in Natural Birch, or a coloured laminate top. A steam-bent back, molded for comfort, is attached but may be removed for use as a stool alone. Seat height measures 12 1/2".
Aalto's bentwood furniture had a great influence on the American designers Charles and Ray Eames and the Finnish-born Eero Saarinen. In 1935 the Artek company was established in Finland to mass-produce and distribute wood furniture designed by Aalto and his wife, Aino. Most of their designs remain in production.
